On June 10, 2026, a clean, in-order amendment to advance the Freedom to Carry Act was killed after enough Republicans joined every Democrat to kill it. The Democrats stood and cheered.

That amendment would have removed suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and short-barreled shotguns from Ohio’s “dangerous ordnance” classification and ended the state-law trap that still requires federal NFA registration for legal possession and carry in Ohio.

Some members who cosponsored the bill and signed candidate surveys promising support later voted to kill it. Pointing only to the incomplete Senate Bill 214 (suppressors alone) is not enough — it leaves short-barreled rifle and short-barreled shotgun owners exposed to continued felony risk.

Ohio has a Republican supermajority. No Democrat votes are required. Other Republican-controlled states are already moving. Ohio does not have to lag behind.
