U.S. Senate
U.S. Senate: Jon Husted (R), Grade B-
Refused to answer OGO’s 2026 primary candidate survey. In October 2019, as Lt. Governor, he stood with Gov. Mike DeWine to unveil STRONG Ohio (Senate Bill 221), the DeWine-Husted gun-control bill. It would have created ‘Safety Protection Orders’ that expanded Ohio’s pink-slip process so a court could order a person’s guns surrendered, which OGO called Red Flag Gun Confiscation under another name. It also would have made it easier to prosecute private gun sellers, lowering the standard from ‘reckless’ to ‘negligent’ and doubling the maximum prison term to 36 months. Husted said at the time, ‘Everything we are doing places no new restrictions or limitations on a law-abiding citizen to own a gun.’ His 2026 Senate campaign touts his Second Amendment record but doesn’t mention STRONG Ohio, and we found no record that he has ever disavowed it. In the Senate, he voted for the 2025 law zeroing the federal tax on suppressors and short-barreled rifles and voted to confirm Robert Cekada as ATF Director. Endorsed in 2026 by the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio.
