23 Politicians Want to End Online Ammo Orders

Wed, Oct 21, 2026

H.R. 7166, the so-called “Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act,” now has 23 cosponsors, every one of them a Democrat. It would end private ammo sales, require a photo ID in person for every purchase and put bulk buyers on a police report. No Ohio Congressman has signed on yet, and Ohio Gun Owners wants every one of them on record against it.

On Oct. 5, Rep. Troy Carter, a Democrat from Louisiana, signed on to H.R. 7166, the so-called “Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act.” That makes 23 cosponsors, every one of them a Democrat. I’ve read the bill, and the name tells you exactly what they’re after.

Here’s what it does. Only federally licensed dealers could sell ammunition, so if you sell a few boxes to your neighbor or your hunting buddy, that’s over. Every buyer would have to show a photo ID to the dealer “in the physical presence of the person,” which effectively ends ordering ammo online and having it shipped to your home. And if you buy more than 1,000 rounds in five business days, the dealer has to report you to the Attorney General and to state or local police.

Think about how many Ohioans buy ammo. A lot of us live a long way from a gun shop with decent stock and decent prices, so we order online. This bill tells every one of those people to drive in and show their papers.

Not one member of Ohio’s U.S. House delegation has signed on yet. Don’t take that as safety. The bill has sat in the House Judiciary Committee since Jan. 20, and it hasn’t had a hearing or a vote. But 23 politicians already want this, and I want every Ohio Congressman on record against it now, before anyone in Washington starts counting votes.

When you sign, your Congressman knows where you stand and what you expect from him or her on this bill. That’s the whole point. I’d rather they hear it from Ohio gun owners now than act surprised later.

P.S. H.R. 7166 would make ammo a face-to-face, show-your-ID purchase and put bulk buyers on a police report. No Ohio Representative has cosponsored it yet, and I want to keep it that way. Please sign against H.R. 7166 here.
